Summersell Center Sponsors Upcoming Public History Internships in Community

The Summersell Center for Southern History’s Public History Initiative is sponsoring a series of local internships with organizations in the community during the Spring 2017 semester. Students will be partnered with on-campus and local organizations, such as the Gorgas House, Hoole Special Collections, and local churches and clubs, to conduct research and create projects that communicate their history to the public. The History Department came together yesterday to celebrate the publication of Dr. George Rable’s sixth and latest book, Damn Yankees: Demonization and Defiance in the Confederate South (Louisiana State University Press, 2015). Thursday, September 11, at 5:30 P.M., the Summersell Center for the Study of the South will host Wayne Flynt, Professor Emeritus at Auburn University. Dr. Flynt will present a lecture on Greek life, diversity, and structural inequalities here and elsewhere in The University of Alabama. The lecture will be presented in room 30 of ten Hoor Hall.

Jones Gallery of Art in downtown Tuscaloosa opens today its first exhibit of the year, ‘Scottsboro Boys: The Fred Hiroshige Photographs’ from the Morgan County Archives. It showcases historic photographs on loan from Morgan County that document the 1933 retrial of one of Alabama’s ‘Scottsboro Boys.’ The exhibit will be on display until Feb. 21.
