Department alumnus Adam Petty (PhD 2018, MA 2014) has recently accepted a position as a Historian and Documentary Editor for the Joseph Smith Papers. Petty completed his doctorate under George Rable last year, with a focus on the Civil War era. His dissertation “Virginia’s Wilderness: Investigating the Landscape of War,” focused on the interaction between the environment and three military campaigns in Virginia. Department Attends SHA Convention, Holds Reception Honoring George Rable.

  The Department of History hosted a reception honoring Dr. George C. Rable at the 2017 Southern Historical Association Convention in Dallas, Texas. Rable, the longtime Summersell Chair of Southern History in the department, retired last year. Colleagues, former graduate students, and friends gathered to congratulate Rable on his well-deserved retirement.   Dr. Lawrence F. Kohl is retiring after thirty years of teaching at The University of Alabama. He and the department celebrated his upcoming retirement with a lecture entitled, “On Life, History, and Teaching: Reflections on Retirement.” Kohl’s moving speech spanned from his serene childhood in Michigan, to his lifelong obsession with time, to the importance of teachers and students. After 30 years in the University of Alabama’s Department of History, Dr. Lawrence F. Kohl will be retiring at the end of the 2016-2017 school year.
