“The Free State of Jones” – Movie Screening and Discussion with Dr. Victoria Bynum

The History Department will be screening the 2016 movie “The Free State of Jones” on Thursday, March 1, at 3:30pm in Gorgas 205. The film will be followed by a discussion with historian Victoria Bynum. Dr. Bynum’s 2001 book, The Free State of Jones: Mississippi’s’ Longest War, chronicles the compelling stories of individuals featured in the film. Dr. Bynum is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History at Texas State University, San Marcos. An award-winning author and NEH Fellow, she has published widely on anti-Confederate guerrillas, women, and mixed-race families of the Civil War Era South.
This event is sponsored by the Charles G. Summersell Chair of Southern History and the College of Arts and Sciences. It is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
