Graduate Students Participate in Night at the Museum

Saturday, March 4 was the 12th annual Night at the Museum community event hosted by the Graduate School at The University of Alabama. The program brought graduate students from various academic departments to the Museum of Natural History, where they hosted interactive stations catering to young people from the Tuscaloosa area. Dr. Julia Brock and graduate students rounded out the Spring 2022 semester with a trip to the Pickensville Rosenwald School Museum, in Pickens County, Alabama. The Rosenwald School program began in the early 1900s as a partnership between the Tuskegee Institute’s Booker T. Washington and Samuel Rosenwald, the president of Sears, Roebuck & Company, to provide schools for rural African Americans. The 11th Annual Graduate History Conference on Power and Struggle went off last weekend without a hitch. On Friday night, Dr. Vanessa Holden, of the University of Kentucky, delivered a keynote address on accessing tight-knit communities as an outsider, especially when the subject surrounding such communal closeness is wrought with contention.   The Department of History hosted a reception honoring Dr. George C. Rable at the 2017 Southern Historical Association Convention in Dallas, Texas. Rable, the longtime Summersell Chair of Southern History in the department, retired last year. Power & Struggle Conference Begins Friday, September 22

Registration for the 2017 Power & Struggle Conference will begin on Friday, September 22, at 5:00 pm, in Smith Hall. A reception will follow from 5:30-6, supper from 6-7:00, and the keynote address from Dr. Kate Brown, Professor of History at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, will begin at 7:00 pm. Faculty Defeat Graduate Students Once Again in Annual Softball Game

The third annual Faculty-Graduate Student Softball Game was played on Saturday, April 30. The professors, endowed with both wisdom and experience, took an early lead until the graduate students, hungry to prove both their analytical and batting skills, made a roaring come back deep in the game. Entering the ninth inning with the score tied 16-16, the professors dug deep, and with the tenacity that comes from a lifestyle of publish or perish, managed to scrap their third successive win.
