Dr. Howard Jones, University Research Professor Emeritus

The History Department’s Jones Scholarship was endowed by Mr. Stephen and Mrs. Anne Avera in honor of long-time faculty member Dr. Howard Jones, a specialist in American diplomatic history who retired in 2015. Dr. Jones is the author of more than a dozen books, and winner of both the Burnum Distinguished Faculty Award and the Blackmon-Moody Outstanding Professor Award, two of the highest honors awarded to UA faculty.

Intended to recognize excellence among History students, the Jones Scholarship is open to all majors and minors with a competitive GPA. The application should be completed and submitted online through your myBama account. Once you are logged in, click on the Admissions/Scholarships tab and then the Currently Enrolled Students link inside the Scholarships box. In order to be considered for the scholarship, students should apply before March 1.

UA Away Scholarships

The Division of Student Affairs coordinates the awarding of several UA Away Scholarships for undergraduates. The online application is now open for these scholarships. These endowed awards provide financial support for undergraduate students across all colleges who wish to participate in unique learning opportunities away from campus. UA Away supports (3) three distinct opportunities:

  • Study Away: Students travel to another country, city, or university to study in their academic fields. The Study Abroad Program and National Student Exchange offer these opportunities.
  • Serve Away: Students volunteer for service projects, often related to their fields of study or career goals, which expose them to issues related to poverty, hunger, and lack of educational resources, and expose them to new cultures and regions. Opportunities for service are available through the Center for Service and Leadership.
  • Work Away: Students receive first-hand work experience, related to academic and career goals, that increases their marketability to future employers.

The application for these awards is simple and requires the submission of a recommendation from a member of the UA faculty or staff. There are two scholarship cycles for UA Away awards. Students may complete an application in the fall for spring travel or in the spring for summer and/or fall travel.

Current students should apply online at https://sa-app01.ua.edu/uaAway/public/home using their mybama username and password. The application will remain open until November 11, 2016, after which time the committee will review submissions and process award decisions.
